Windfall Wine Farm & Cottages, Robertson

Nestled in the Agterkliphoogte Valley lies Windfall, a small boutique wine farm and one of South Africa’s best kept secrets. Windfall took its name from South African cricketing legend, Eddie Barlow, who noticed the mist cascading down the surrounding mountains of Robertson, or “The Valley of Wine and Roses” as it’s come to be known.

Eddie Barlow bought Windfall as Spesbona from Phillip Lourens and later sold it to prominent KZN property developer, Robert Alexander, who has rejuvenated Windfall by restoring dams, replanting vineyards, unearthing new boreholes and establishing Windfall’s boutique cellar. Kobus van der Merwe brings a wealth of experience to his role as winemaker on Windfall with 30 years in the industry, complemented by his passion for winemaking, his zeal for excellence and his determination to discover new, elegant tastes.

Viljoensdrift Wines, Robertson


Wine tourists can expect much more from Viljoensdrift than just a taste of their distinctive wines. A visit to this peaceful haven, a mere 90 minutes from Cape Town, also promises an inspirational riverside experience including a relaxing boat trip on the tranquil waters of the Breede River, a taste adventure from the deli and a gourmet picnic on the banks of the river.

Viljoensdrift is a family owned farm and winery with brothers Fred and Manie Viljoen at the helm.  Manie, as viticulturist, manages the vines and deciduous fruit, while Fred works his magic in the cellar.

In 1998 Fred and Manie opened the cellar door after 30 years of supplying grapes to the local co-op and now they are reaping the benefits of their commitment to and passion for wine making.  They have since then re-aligned Viljoensdrift’s focus to own label production and has entered the market place, locally and internationally with resounding success.

Besides crafting exquisite wines on the farm, a significant amount of energy goes into their fruit production operation, with apricots and peaches grown mainly for canning purposes.

Le Roux and Fourie Vignerons, Robertson


At the foot of the majestic Langeberg Mountains resides Le Roux & Fourie Vignerons on Buitenstekloof farm, established circa 1823.

In 2003, brothers Johan and Le Roux Fourie started producing wine in honor of their French Huguenot grandfathers, Le Roux and Fourie. The brothers believe wine making is a life long passion with a strong legacy.

The LRF philosophy is to make unique terroir based wines and to not compete directly with others.  As they produce hand-crafted wines, the Fouries have the luxury of harvesting 3 to 4 times through a single block, giving control over the wine’s structure and balance.

The cellar is the first straw bale cellar in South Africa and also the highest structure of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere (9m at its highest point), as far as is known. It is specially designed to create the perfect climate for wine making, incidentally reducing the carbon footprint and energy usage substantially.

Due to the high limestone deposits in the soil, wines of distinction are produced. Le Roux & Fourie’s signature award-winning Carignan is one of the few wines in South Africa that is 100% from the Carignan grape.

The Flag 'n Wine World at Le Roux & Fourie Vignerons is especially designed to learn about and pray for nations and to explore world geography in a classroom without walls!

More than 220 flags were manufactured from recycled pallets and painted - a project that took 8 months to complete!

Paarl Ommiberg/Round The Rock Festival, Paarl

This young wine festival takes visitors off the beaten track to sample the best of the Paarl Wine Route for the tenth year running (2017).

Festival goers are literally guided around the iconic Paarl Rock to cellars and farms on the outskirts of Paarl to sample young wines from the latest harvest and to celebrate the diversity of this historic wine region.

Participating wineries range from small boutique cellars to family-owned vineyards and iconic wineries.

Each has a unique atmosphere, but will be pulling out all the stops to present a fun-filled day programme with superlative young wines, amusing harvest activities as well as great kids’ entertainment.  Visitors can also enjoy live music, fabulous food offerings and the incredibly beautiful scenery of the Boland.

OmmiBerg pays homage to this season’s young wines and wine lovers will be able to taste these unfiltered wines straight from the barrel and tanks.

This unique experience puts OmmiBerg in a class of its own as it is the only event of its kind in South Africa.

The tradition to honour young or nouveau wines can be traced back to Europe, where special celebrations are hosted each year.

In Germany, wineries open their cellar doors for one day only during each harvest season and serve federweisser and zwiebelkuchen or unfiltered wine with onion tartlets, while in France hundreds of Beaujolais Nouveau festivals are hosted each year.

According to Stephen Richardson, chairman of the Paarl Wine Route, OmmiBerg presents quite a unique opportunity for wine enthusiasts.

“Obviously, it is a very rare experience to be able to taste young wines fresh from the tank or barrel.  Not only is it a celebration of the harvest that the public can now participate in, but it also shows the potential of the wines from our region.

Traditionally, Paarl wines have done exceptionally well at the SA Young Wine Challenge and this allows us a sneak preview of what is to be expected.  It is also a chance for members of the public to see winemaking in action, which makes a huge difference from just picking a bottle off the shelves and will hopefully lead to a greater appreciation of the art of winemaking,” mentions Richardson.

In addition to the young wine tastings, wine buffs will also be able to enjoy special tastings of bottled wines from various participating wineries as well as cellar tours, vineyard drives and blending tutorials conducted by the cellar masters and winemakers.
